Book Review: THE HUNGER GAMES

Title: Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins
Rating:
Good if you...want it all from a book: a kick ass plot, a love triangle, a strong leading female.

Summary (Amazon):
Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

My Thoughts...
I knew before reading this book that I would love it. Then I read and--surprise surprise--I loved it! It was the perfect mixture of danger, romance, and suspense. First, the plot is so unique and wonderful-- a distopian society where 24 kids are forced to fight to the death in a closed arena in front of live TV. There are the Careers, kids who have been training for this their whole lives--brutal and deadly, the kids as young as 12--sweet and innocent, and then there is Katniss who we find is just as worthy of a fighter as any--she's a survivor. Then there is Peeta, the boy from district 12 who enters with Katniss--the boy who has always been secretly in love with Katniss. It's "The Most Dangerous Game" meets "1984" from a YA perspective.

There was a moment in this book, just after the games have started, after the reader has gotten to know Katniss and is of course on her side, rooting for her to succeed but also rooting for a romance between her and Peeta to form (even if that can't be possible b/c one of them must die--she must kill him, eventually, if she is to live) when Katniss sees him again in the games. I've never had such a heart-stopping moment come from a book. I can't say anymore, but this one moment was worth the whole book. 5/5 Rating all the way!

This is a great book. A must own and a super fast read.

I'm not sure who would root from team gale. It's like team jacob people....or kids who like the Cowboys when the rest of their family likes the Redskins...they just do it to be different.
