Wannabe Writers #13

Wannabe Writers is a writing group for the un-published and anyone is welcome to join. It's a place where future authors can ask questions, share stories, and get feedback. Click (here) to find more about how it works.

Where I am in the writing process: I started writing in Nov. 2008.  I have one complete novel (still only a rough draft) and two WIPs.  I'm currently taking a writing break.  (Though, I have been daydreaming and working out scenes in my head for one of my WIPs.  It won't be long before that thinking starts to spill over on to paper.)

My current problems: I don't really have one because I haven't written anything in the past week.  I haven't been blogging much lately either.  (I did manage to get to everyone's posts from last week this morning.  Sorry that took me all week.)  I'll get back on track one of these days but I'm actually starting to enjoy all my extra free time--some things I've been neglecting for months are now finally being taken of.

My question this week:  What do you give up in order to write?

What do I give up?

friends, long walks, TV, Twitter (sometimes), and sanity

SLEEP!!! My normal writing time is between 12-2 am. YIKES. That usually means the more I write, the less I sleep. The entire rest of my day is either filled up with stuff, or there are people around- I can't write when my loquacious child is in the room, and if my husband is home, the tv is on, and who can focus like that? So my only recourse is to write when everyone else is in bed. Not the greatest set up, but that's why the nap was invented. :)

This is such a neat blog meme Sarah - thanks for hosting it! I gave up T.V. but, honestly, that wasn't much of a sacrifice. Unfortunately I GAINED twitter (wasn't on before writing) and now that's a time sink for me! gotta work on that.

When is school out for you?

Normality. Which is why I can't be one of those writers who writes daily. I turn into a freak when I'm writing. Isolation, zoning out, retreating.

Sleep, any hope of other hobbies, sanity, my fingernails...but it's all worth it. :-D

Posted again this week. This is definitely one of my favorite memes now :)

I also think a break is much-needed every once in a while. We all need it, to refresh and relax. But I think that's what's crazy about writing.. no matter how much break you think you need/want, you always end up back with a pen on your hand, scribbling away.

J.Kaye--- My last day isn't until the Friday before 4th of July...then I'm leaving for vacation the following week. SO I was going to start the next 50K as soon as I got back. Does that work for you? (I think I might blog on this as soon as the current one ends. Which by the way what day are we on?)

Sarah - I'll be ready whenever you are. The reason I asked is my mother was a school teacher. A couple of weeks after school ended, life would settle enough for her to focus on other things. That you are going on a vacation is perfect! You'll be all relaxed and ready to go when you get back. ;)

Sunday marks day 45. The last day of this month will be the last day of this challenge.

I am looking forward to the break, but also excited about doing this again.

I give up adventure to write but in writing, I re-live adventures.

Hopefully you all don't mind if I join you.

Honestly, I give up working on homework and T.V. I still get everything done, I've just learned to do it quicker. ;)

Oooo this sounds like a great idea. I'll be checking back again to see when you do this meme again.

What have I given up? Basically, a social life. I don't do much with friends anymore, just my family. Sometimes I really feel deprived, is this really worth it? I tell myself, even if I never get published, I'll still have created something and carried it through to completion.

I should give up more or exchange some things. My pudgy middles need some exorcising through exercise.

It's kind of funny. I'd already fled the corporate life and opted to do something different. However, writing has reignited my entrepreneurial juices - or maybe shoved them to the forefront instead - I can't say which applies more. What I do know is that each day I wake eager to do something I love. It doesn't feel like work and the time I invest in all the activities that support the dream are testament of what's possible when you're working in your element.
