Wannabe Writers #41 (Originallity)

Wannabe Writers is an Internet writing group. Everyone is welcome to join. It's a place to meet other writers, ask questions, and get feedback. Click here to find more about how it works.

So I am posting early this week since tonight I am leaving for Ireland.  Crazy, right?  I'm going to be in Ireland for the next 7 weeks and I'm not really sure if I'll even have internet.  Yikes.  And my phone won't work there.  Double Yikes.  And who even knows about cable.  AH!  I might as well be moving to another planet.  Anyway, I'll figure something out.  Coffee shops?  Internet cafes?  There better be something.  Thank God for Skype.

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished with three novels in progress.  Right now I am hating them all and thinking about beginning a fourth!  Will I ever finish anything?

My current problem(s):  Pretty much thinking all my writing ideas are lame.

My question this week: Is any idea really original?

That sounds exciting yet scary at the same time. Have a great time and I hope you post pictures. I would love to go to Ireland sometime.

Hey, I just wondered if you were participating in National Novel Writing Month. From the sound of your recent posts I thought it might be something you'd be interested in. I have info about it here: http://maryredingwrites.blogspot.com/2010/11/nanowrimo.html

According to one writer friend, no idea is original. Everything has been done, but it's the twist on the done that is important.

Have fun in Ireland. Hope it's a blast!

NO. LOL No idea is really orginial. I think it's all in the execution. :)

I think it can't be completely original but it can be though of as innovative...

I think original is a point of view. You could pull a Bachman, and write something like "Blaze". He took "Of Men and Mice" and formed his own classic tale for his time. I guess what I'm trying to say is yes, many things are original but artistic people feed off each other. How can we not? Everyone learns from someone else. P.S. Don't worry, you seem to truly love writing; go old school and grab a note book or a tape-recorder. Be safe in the sky, and always ask the important questions: What if, why not, and did I spell that right? Happy hunting.

I have a question rather than a comment: How do you block out outside distractions while writing?

Wow...takes alot for you to hit my envy bone. May i just say....Ireland....ouch....whimper!

Lone Wolf: It depends on the distraction. Some are worth bothering about, such as potty breaks. Others, such as dishes, shopping and phones, are easy to ignore, once you market it a bit. I thought for years my family would be unable to remember to breath without my watching them. They thought I was the catcher. Strange thing is, they never really needed catching. Choose your most valuable distractions, let the others wither if they must.
