Wannabe Writers #17

Wannabe Writers is a writing group for the un-published and anyone is welcome to join. It's a place where future authors can ask questions, share stories, and get feedback. Click (here) to find more about how it works.

Where I am in the writing process: I started writing in Nov. 2008. None of work is truely finished and I've just begun a new novel (2000 words in). (Well, it's really just a re-write of an old novel.)

My current problems: I still haven't fully gotten back into the swing of things (after taking a break from writing) but I'm working on it.  I'm on the verge of getting committed again. I only hope it happens soon. Summer is just around the corner and since I'm a teacher I won't be working here very soon.  I can't wait to start writing again!  I'm getting more and more excited about it.  I want to finish something this summer!  Anything!  I want to use lulu.com and print my book (just for me) and have it on my shelf.  I think it would just feel to good to complete a project.  I'll hope for publication later.

My question this week:  Do you recommend finishing (and polishing) a novel, even if you know the story would never be strong enough for publication?  To finish just for the sake of finishing or to focus your energies on a better project?

Scott Westerfeld wrote a great post about finishing even when you know the story will never go anywhere. I've linked to it in this week's post. :)

The lulu.com idea is a great one, even if you plan on trying for publication later!

The question this week seemed made for me!

Great question. I'm a definite YES in finishing a story/novel. As writers, we ultimately write material that, as a reader, we find appealing. So, as a reader (and potentially the only reader), I would want to know how the story ends (the official, fully written version, not the crazy jumbled ending in my head). ^_^

I think the experience of finishing a novel (even one you know is bad) is invaluable! I learned so much from my first novel, and I think the 2nd is better for it.
