Wannabe Writers #29

Wannabe Writers is a writing group for the un-published and anyone is welcome to join. It's a place where future authors can ask questions, share stories, and get feedback. Click (here) to find more about how it works.

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished. Been writing since Nov. 2008.

My current problem(s): Writing my antagonist. This actually happens to be one of my favorite parts. I think I've done a good job of it in the past. But in my current WIP I'm on page 138 and just introduced him. Many of my critique partners have said that perhaps I should have some mention of him a little sooner than that. But I honestly can't find a way to work him in sooner-- So what do I do? What have you don't in your own novel? (What my reader and critique partner don't know is that my true antagonist has actually already been introduced and my MC thinks this person trustworthy. I want to distract the reader from this with the introduction of a late Antagonist. Wow is that too much?)

This week's question: Introducing an Antagonist to your story. HOW? WHEN? WHY?

I think it sounds like you're introducing that antagonist in the perfect place, especially since it's really a distraction. And if that feels right, I say go for it.

Sarah, it sounds like you do the same thing I do. I introduce the antagonist early on, but you don't find out they are until much later. I hope you don't put too much thought into it. I tend to overthink things when writing.
