Wannabe Writers #35

Wannabe Writers is an Internet writing group I created. Everyone is welcome to join. It's a place to meet other writers, ask questions, and get feedback. Click here to find out more about how it works.

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished. Right now I am currently working on finishing my novel Glitch--same as last week--and I'm 43K into it.  I'm getting closer and closer to the climax.  My word goal is 60K.

My current problem(s): I only wrote for about an hour this week.  Yikes!  And during that hour I didn't add anything to the end of my story, I only edited.  It's just been a busy week at work and I haven't felt like writing at all.  This has happened to me before.  Every few months I always come to a point where I get tired of writing and need a break.  It might last for about a month.  Then ideas start forming in my head, demanding to get out, and then I'm back to writing again.  But I think I might be in a of a break again.

My question this week:  Do you ever need long-term breaks from your work?  Are they healthy for your work?

I really wanted to thank everyone who participates in Wannabe Writers.  I love hearing your feedback each week.  What is your writing question this week?

I may take any where from a few days off, to a week, or so.

Only once did I quit writing for about 4 years to take up crafts.

I missed writing. Got back into it, and never looked back. Nothing gives me as much pleasure as when I get a scene, chapter, or whole book done.

I've taken long breaks from writing. I find if I get to the point where I need a break and I try to force it, my writing sucks. Sometimes when I try to force it, I get blocked and can't write...it's like my brain is sayinh, "You need a break & if you won't take it, I'll take it for you." If I need a break and take it, I always come back with a fresh outlook and my writing doesn't pay.

I take breaks from writing from time to time. I think giving yourself a break lets you really think on what's going to happen next. If you write a lot everyday just to be writing, that doesn't necessarily mean you're writing what you want to write. Sure, you got something done, but it is really what you want? I think breaks from writing are good ways for you to capture in your mind what's going to happen. But when you think of it, you better write it down, don't let the moment pass! :)

It seems I am taking a break now from my current WIP. I think my problem is motivation and time restraints. I am not sure if they are healthy, but I'd like to think so.

I've taken some month-long breaks from writing. While I don't *like* it, I think sometimes it's good to give me a break and give me some perspective on my project. I end up going back refreshed, my work seems new again, and I can see what's not working now that I've got some distance. Remember, not all writing is what's done on your computer or on paper. Even when I'm not writing, I'm thinking about my characters, their motivations, the story, what's going to happen, etc. :)

I'm the same -- I get tired of writing and take way too long of breaks. Then when I do write I'm extremely happy because I'm lost in the world I've created. But then fear sneaks in and I procrastinate. :(

As long as those breaks give you inspiration, they're healthy. Other than that, I mostly forget the story and what has happened. I wish I didn't take long breaks.
