Wannabe Writers #43 (Focus)

Wannabe Writers is an Internet writing group. Everyone is welcome to join. It's a place to meet other writers, ask questions, and get feedback. Click here to find more about how it works.

Here's the deal.  I've stopped doing my post weekly (on Saturdays) and have started doing them basically whenever I feel the need.  So if you still follow my Wannabe Writer posts then feel free to do the same and then just link below whenever you write your own post.

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished. Still.  UGH!

My current problem(s): Losing momentum.  If you read my last post you probably noticed how eager I was to get back into writing and how excited I was about my current novel.  All that good stuff is quickly dropping.  I'm still working hard on finishing this first draft, but it's getting harder and harder to keep up the same level of work each day.  HELP!  It's the same old problems holding me back...self doubt, well really just self doubt.

My question this week: What keeps you focused on your writing, even when it gets kind of boring?

Oh...I'm trying a new linking tool thing. Let me know if you like it any better? (Mr. Linky costs 10$ a year and it's about time to renew and I'd rather use this free one.)

I'm going through the same blah feelings at the moment. I really want to finish my WIP, but just can't seem to get started. Let me know if you figure it out!

It must be contagious. My biggest de-motivating factor is self-doubt. I was in the process of editing my MS and I am having 2nd thoughts. I am now contemplating a complete rewrite starting after chapter 2. (There were 25 chapters.)

I wish I had words of wisdom to help you continue on, but I am out at the moment. Just don't give up!

Ugh, I struggle with losing momentum as well. Personally, I find that with a family, three children and so many responsibilities that sometimes I just get tired and then the momentum fizzles right out when my head hits the pillow earlier than it should. I try to remind myself of my goal, remember what I'm working towards but also cut myself some slack:) Good luck! Glad I came across your blog.

Haha, sometimes it helps to bribe yourself (if I finish writing this chapter, I can read this/watch that/eat this). Sometimes it helps to step away, but usually I would advise setting doable goals (write 1000 words today!) because even if I'm dragging, there's always a sense of accomplishment when I do reach it :)

Hi Sarah.
I know what you are going through, and it really sucks.Though Hayley`s idea (above) seems quite good,I`d say that you should probably take a little rest, and not worry about things like "Why am I not writing at this very moment?".Sometimes it is not such a bad idea to not make a big fuss of it;so what if you write only 500 words per day,or even 50.A writer`s brain doesn`t always work the same,at certain times there might be too much tension.
To answer your question;ideas about further events in my story make me keep writing and be happy with what I am doing. It doesn`t matter as long as I come up with great ideas that keep me motivated.

I hope you keep up the work and you get published soon.
